WE CAN WIN
The fight against Energy Fuels’ attempts to transport, haul, extract, and mill uranium stretches back many decades. From the early 1980s onward, resistance to what‘s now called the “Pinyon Plain Mine” just south of the Grand Canyon was aided by a bearish uranium market. This meant Energy Fuels was unable to profitably extract uranium from the mine. This changed after the company secured a contract with the Department of Energy, the manufacturer of the United States’ nuclear weapons. Each new generation of the nuclear age must rise to defend water, the sacred, the Earth, and life itself. From the mines across the west to the White Mesa Mill in Utah, onward to Honeywell’s Metropolis Works in IL, the secretive weapons plants beyond, or their headquarters in Lakewood CO: everywhere there are opportunities to break this cycle.

Since the Navajo Nation’s government sold out the people to enter into a partnership with Energy Fuels, allowing for uranium transport through the Navajo Nation, elders across Havasupai and Dine territories have asked: when will the people rise up to stop them? All legislative and legal avenues have been exhausted! After four decades of struggle to protect the people and the land from the destructive forces of the uranium industry—including the designation of a new monument and dozens of lawsuits by indigenous nations and environmental groups—it is clear that our moment requires a new, direct intervention.
